Ferries

The passenger ferry “Nida” was built in the Bourg Shipyard, Republic of Bulgaria, in 2006.
The ferry (with lowered ramps) is 55 metres in length and 14 metres in breadth; the ferry has four main engines with the power of 120 kW each. The ferry can accommodate 700 people. The new ferry has four ramps for people to embark and disembark the ferry. This noticeably accelerates communication to the Curonian Spit. The new ferry is considerably quicker and more economical. The ferry can also be operated in stronger wind and in ice-drift.

The passenger-cargo ferry “Baltija” was built in the Bourg Shipyard, Republic of Bulgaria, in 2005. The ferry is 62 metres in length and 14 metres in breadth. Possessing two engines with the power of 1300 horse powers and the steering-column turning around its axle at a 360° angle, the ferry is able to develop the speed of 20 km/h, to turn around on the spot and to sail sideways. Besides, it can be operated in wind blowing at 30 m/s, whereas the operation of the old ferries is suspended when the wind reaches 20 m/s. At a time the ferry can carry up to 40 passenger cars, while its closed salon can accommodate 100 passengers. In one hour the ferry can make 4 voyages Smiltynė-Klaipėda, Klaipėda-Smiltynė, i.e. twice more than the old ferries. Despite these telling indicators, the new ferry “Baltija” is most economical not only in respect of labour productivity, but also in respect of fuel and oil costs, which are half lower in comparison with the old ferries.

The operation of the new ferry “Neringa” (built in the Bourg Shipyard, Republic of Bulgaria) was launched in 2004. Actual carriage volumes have proved that the labour productivity of the ferry “Neringa” is highest. In a working hour, the large ferries accomplish 2 voyages, while the ferry “Neringa” makes 3 voyages. The large ferries can carry 70 passenger cars in 1 voyage and 140 passenger cars in one hour (in 2 voyages). The ferry “Neringa” can carry 76 passenger cars in 1 voyage and 228 passenger cars in one hour. It accounts for carriage volumes larger by 62.8 percent. When comparing the equal number of hours worked (98 working hours): ferry “NEMUNAS” makes 196 voyages and carries up to 5664 vehicles, ferry “ŽALGIRIS” makes 196 voyages and carries up to 6017 vehicles, ferry “NERINGA” makes 293 voyages and carries up to 9584 vehicles. The productivity of the ferry “NERINGA” is higher even by 59.3 percent.
